Description
Some people with severe and persistent mental illness do not reach an acceptable level of mental health, psychosocial functioning, and quality of life even with the best treatment. The probability of symptom reduction decreases with each unsuccessful treatment attempt, while the likelihood of physical and psychological side effects rises. Calls for integrating palliative care into psychiatry (palliative psychiatry) stem from the worsening benefit-to-harm ratio of treatment aimed at reducing symptoms.
