In the last half of the twentieth century, the spectacular development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has affected almost all areas of life. Among the areas most significantly affected has been the scientific communications process - both formal and informal. Changes have occurred at different levels and the combined effect of these changes has been a complete transformation of the process. Developments have occurred in the generation, recording, organization, search and retrieval, preservation and use of textual, visual and audio information.
